Coenzymes

Coenzymes are a general term for a large group of organic cofactors that are essential for enzymes to catalyse redox reactions, group transfers and isomerisation reactions. They perform the function of transferring electrons, atoms or groups in enzyme-catalysed reactions. Coenzymes can also be considered as second substrates because they undergo the opposite chemical change to the substrate when the catalytic reaction takes place.
