Potassium periodate is a simple ionic salt, only slightly soluble in water, that has been used to determine potassium concentrations, as an oxidizing agent, and as a source for oxygen. This compound has also been used to determine the concentration of other compounds via the measurement of the reaction that occurs between DPC and potassium periodate. Potassium periodate is widely used as an oxidizing agent.It produces singlet oxygen (1O2) in alkaline medium via a non-photochemical pathway. This singlet oxygen can selectively oxidizes aqueous organic pollutants
