Generates quinones via glycol cleavage and oxidation of hydroquinones Useful reagent for the oxidation of carbohydrates prior to labeling with biotin hydrazide Sodium periodate is use in molecular biology and carbohydrate research to cleave carbon-carbon bonds of carbohydrates alginates, chitosans, hyaluronan, scleroglucan/schizophylla?n, cellulose nucleic acids other molecules rich in hydroxyls and ketones to prepare them for chemical and physical modifications.

Application

Sodium metaperiodate finds application as catalyst in organic reactions]. For example it is known to catalyze selective sulfonylation of aromatics and the graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile.
