Ytterbium(III) oxide serves as a dopant for silicate mineral crystals in lasers, and a colorant for glasses and enamels. It is employed in the preparation of optical fibers, and special types of alloys. It is used in the preparation of chiral ytterbium complexes which are used as catalysts for enantioselective organic synthesis with high yields. It finds application in optical, electronic and ceramic industries. It is used as additives for fluorescent powder and in the preparation of magnetic bubbles in computers.
