It is an intermediate in the citric acid cycle. It is highly soluble in water and is present ubiquitously. It is produced in the mitochondria by the action of pyruvate carboxylase on pyruvate. Breakdown products of oxaloacetate includes malate, pyruvate and aspartic acid. |
